Internet speed describes how quickly data can move between your device and the Internet. It is usually measured in Mbps (megabits per second).
Download speed affects websites, downloads, streaming and browsing. Upload speed matters when sending files, uploading videos, making video calls, live streaming and backing up data.
A higher speed is useful, but speed is not everything. Ping, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi quality and network congestion can also affect your experience.
Ping, also called latency, measures how long it takes for a request to travel to a server and for the response to return. It is measured in milliseconds (ms).
Lower ping means less delay. Ping is especially important for online gaming, video calls, remote work and other real-time activities.
Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is very good, 50–100 ms is good, while 100 ms or more can introduce noticeable delay.
Jitter measures how much the timing of network packets changes from one moment to another. It is measured in milliseconds (ms).
Lower jitter means a more consistent connection. High jitter can cause audio problems, unstable video calls, inconsistent gaming and uneven communication.
Jitter is especially important when data needs to arrive smoothly and consistently rather than simply arriving quickly.
Slow Internet is not always caused by your Internet provider. Your Wi-Fi environment can also affect connection performance.
Common causes include distance from the router, walls, wireless interference, too many connected devices, router limitations and network congestion.
Better router placement, fewer obstacles, updated equipment and a less congested wireless environment can sometimes improve Wi-Fi performance.
